The Town of Floyd is a small rural town just outside the City of Rome. Located on Rt. 365, a main route to the northern resort areas such as Old Forge. Rt. 365 in the Westerly direction is a quick access to the NYS Thruway. Other major highways are Rt 12, Rt.49, and Rt.69 and well-maintained County highways as well. Although we live in upstate NY where winters are real winters, the roads are kept clear and sanded for commuters going to work because all our children are bused to school and the roads must be open early. In the winter crews are on around the clock ready for changing conditions.
The City of Utica and surrounding suburbs are within a 15 to 20 min. drive. Shopping, hospitals and doctors are found in this close by urban areas. Even with the convenient location to the cities, the Town is located in the Tug Hill Region offering rural living along with access to city amenities.
Floyd has one small grocery store, a Nice and Easy, a Golf Corse, Automotive Repair Shops and restaurants. There are two churches, the Floyd United Methodist and Christ Church both located on RT 365. The town is served by a modern volunteer fire department with EMTs and a rescue truck to respond to any emergency. We have a population of 3856. There are two excellent schools districts serving the town residents for their children's educational needs.
The Town was founded in 1796 and named for General William Floyd who served in the American Revolution. The elementary school located on RT 365 is also named after him. In 1996 the Town dedicated a Memorial Park to the armed service veterans that came from this town and fire department veterans. There is a recreational park located on Camroden Rd. with ballparks, (one of them lighted) pavilions, lighted horseshoe courts, tennis and basketball courts, and playground equipment for the children. There is a nature trail for summer hiking and winter cross-country skiing. The town residents can reserve the pavilions for events such as family reunions . There is a 18-hole golf course on Camroden Rd. The town has a Historical Society with their building located at Camroden Corners.
There are many organizations with in the town.
Some of which are
- Grange
- Seniors
- Bands
- Boy and Girl Scouts troops (which are active from Brownies to Eagle Scouts) who have helped in the development of some of the facilities at the Town Park.
Housing can be found in the moderate price range $50,000 to $150,000 depending on size and amenities. There are three newer developments and several older developments with smaller homes. A lot of the houses are on scattered large lots, some with acreage. There are working farms and an Agricultural District. The age of homes range from the older farmhouse to new construction. The values of homes have remained primarily steady over the past years. The excellent school districts serving the area and the good solid value of the town’s properties have contributed to this stability despite the closing of Griffiss Air Force Base in the 1990s. There are trailer parks with sites available and some rental property. The southwesterly portion of Town has city water with a new expansion completed in November of 2000 easterly on RT 365 to the Marcy townline. Further expansion is planned for other areas of the Town.
